Abstract Exposing timber to temperatures approaching 200 °C causes thermal modification and changes its characteristics. This study evaluates the effect of various levels of thermal treatment on the physical properties of juvenile and mature wood from rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Boards taken from 53-year-old rubber trees were thermally modified at up to 220 °C. Thermal treatment caused decreases on the oven-dried density, equilibrium moisture content, and swellings on juvenile and mature woods of H. brasiliensis. Influence of thermal modification at 180-200 °C in juvenile wood was lower than in mature wood, whereas the treatment at 220 °C caused a greater variation in properties of juvenile wood. The thermally modified wood is a suitable product for use in environments with high levels of relative humidity.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of log steaming on the physical properties of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden wood. Logs with diameters between 20 and 25 cm and length of 2.9 m were studied. Half the logs were maintained in their original condition, and the other half were steamed at 90 °C for 20 hours. Later, the logs were sawn into flat boards, and samples were removed to determine the physical properties of the wood. The results showed that log steaming caused a significant decreases of: (1) 6.38% and 7.98% in the respective basic and oven dried density; and (2) 7.20%, 7.80%, 5.13%, and 8.56% in the volumetric, tangential, radial, and axial linear swelling of wood.

RESUMO O lenho de tração é uma estrutura anatômica importante, que permite a reorientação do tronco e participa na arquitetura dos ramos, tendo a função de reforço estrutural. Contudo, sua presença em grande quantidade afeta significativamente as propriedades tecnológicas da madeira, como no caso da seringueira. Entretanto, ainda há demanda de informações acerca de sua origem, distribuição e características estruturais nessa espécie. Portanto, esse trabalho objetivou caracterizar as estruturas celulares no lenho de tração e lenho oposto em Hevea brasiliensis (seringueira) e sua distribuição radial e longitudinal. Para tanto, discos da base e do meio do fuste comercial foram coletados de três árvores provenientes de um plantio comercial localizado em Tabapoã - SP. Foram mensurados o diâmetro tangencial dos elementos de vaso, comprimento de fibras (gelatinosas e não-gelatinosas), ângulo microfibrilar e proporcionalidade de elementos celulares, e a relação entre a presença de fibras gelatinosas e o diâmetro de vasos. Foram observadas fibras gelatinosas nos dois tipos de lenho e nas duas alturas do fuste avaliadas. Os dois tipos de lenho foram diferenciados pelo comprimento de fibras gelatinosas e a proporção de parênquima axial. A região de tração no meio do fuste foi a que mais se diferenciou das demais, com fibras gelatinosas mais compridas e menos abundante, maiores diâmetro e proporção de vasos.Além disso, foi observado menor diâmetro de vasos nas regiões com alta proporção de fibras gelatinosas, sugerindo que a planta investe mais em sustentação que na condução de líquidos.

ABSTRACT Tension wood is an important anatomical structure for its participation in the orientation of the trunk and the architecture of the branches as a function of structural reinforcement. However, its presence in large amounts significantly affects the technological properties of wood, just as in the rubber tree. Nevertheless, there is still demand for information about the origin, distribution and structural features in this species. Thus, this study aims to characterize the cellular structures in tension and opposite wood in Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree), as well as its radial and longitudinal distribution. Discs at the base and the middle of the commercial logs were collected from three trees in a commercial plantation located in Tabapoã - SP. Tangential diameter of vessels, fiber length (gelatinous and non-gelatinous fibers), microfibril angle and proportionality of cellular elements (vessels, axial parenchyma, ray, gelatinous fibers and non-gelatinous fibers) were measured, and influence of gelatinous fiber presence in vessel diameter was observed. Gelatinous fibers were observed in the two types of wood and in the two trunk heights. Both types of wood were distinguished by gelatinous fiber length and the proportion of axial parenchyma. The tension wood in mid-trunk was the most different, with long gelatinous fibers and less abundant, larger vessel diameter and vessel proportion. Moreover, smaller vessel diameter was observed in the regions with a high proportion of gelatinous fibers, suggesting that the plant invests more support than in liquid transport.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do tratamento de modificação térmica nas propriedades físicas dos lenhos juvenil e adulto da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. Para tanto, tábuas centrais foram obtidas de árvores de E. grandis com 30 anos de idade. Esse material foi modificado termicamente a 180 °C no Laboratório de Secagem e Preservação de Madeiras da UNESP, Botucatu-SP, Brasil. Os resultados mostraram que o tratamento de modificação térmica ocasionou: (1) decréscimo de 6,8% na densidade a 0% de umidade no lenho adulto; (2) redução significativa de 14,7% e 35,6% nos inchamentos volumétricos máximos dos lenhos juvenil e adulto, respectivamente; (3) diminuição significativa de 13,7% e 21,3% no teor de umidade de equilíbrio dos lenhos juvenil e adulto, respectivamente. A influência da modificação térmica no lenho juvenil foi menor do que no lenho adulto e ocasionou uma maior uniformização nas propriedades físicas entre esses dois tipos de lenho da madeira de E. grandis.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on the physical properties of juvenile and mature woods of Eucalyptus grandis. Boards were taken from 30-year-old E. grandis trees. The boards were thermally modified at 180 °C in the Laboratory of Wood Drying and Preservation at UNESP, Botucatu, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. The results showed that thermal modification caused: (1) decrease of 6.8% in the density at 0% equilibrium moisture content of mature wood; (2) significant decreases of 14.7% and 35.6% in the maximum volumetric swellings of juvenile and mature woods, respectively; (3) significant decreases of 13.7% and 21.3% in the equilibrium moisture content of juvenile and mature woods, respectively. The influence of thermal modification in juvenile wood was lower than in mature wood and caused greater uniformity in the physical variations between these types of wood in E. grandis.

Objetivou-se, neste estudo, avaliar o efeito do tratamento de vapor preliminar à secagem sobre o teor de umidade inicial, gradiente de umidade e taxa de secagem da madeira de Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden. Tábuas foram vaporizadas à 100ºC após 1 hora de aquecimento inicial. Parte dessas tábuas foi seca em uma estufa elétrica à 50ºC, e outra parte foi seca em estufa de secagem convencional. Os resultados mostraram que a vaporização preliminar à secagem da madeira: (1) reduziu significativamente o teor de umidade inicial em 9.2%; (2) aumentou significativamente a taxa de secagem em 6.2%; (3) diminuiu significativamente o gradiente de umidade entre a camada externa e o centro das tábuas em 15.6%, e entre a camada intermediária e o centro das tábuas em 14.8%. As tábuas vaporizadas quando secas em estufa elétrica apresentaram taxa de secagem de 0.007065, enquanto que em estufa convencional foram 0.008200 e 0.034300 desde verde a 17% e de 17% a 12% de umidade, respectivamente. Ficou demonstrado que a vaporização preliminar à secagem pode ser responsável pela redução no tempo de secagem da madeira dessa espécie.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of steam treatment prior to drying on the initial moisture content, moisture gradient, and drying rate in Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden wood. Boards were steamed at 100ºC for 3 h after 1 h of heating-up. Part of these boards was dried in a drying electric oven at 50ºC, and part was dried at kiln. The results showed that the steaming prior to drying of wood: (1) significantly reduced by 9.2% the initial moisture content; (2) significantly increased by 6.2% the drying rate; (3) significantly decreased by 15.6 and 14.8% the moisture gradient between the outer layer and the center of boards and between the outer and intermediate layers of boards, respectively. Steamed boards when dried in an oven showed drying rate of 0.007065 whereas in kiln were 0.008200 and 0.034300 from green to 17 and 17 to 12% moisture content, respectively. It was demonstrated that the steaming prior to drying can be suitable for reduces the drying times of this kind of wood.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o comportamento do fungo de podridão parda Gloeophylum trabeum e do fungo de podridão branca Pycnoporus sanguineus sobre a madeira de Eucalyptus grandis modificada termicamente. Tábuas de árvores de E. grandis com cinco anos e 11 meses de idade, da empresa Duratex-SA, foram modificadas termicamente entre 180 ºC e 220 ºC no Laboratório de Secagem e Preservação de Madeiras da UNESP, Botucatu-SP, Brasil. Corpos de prova de cada tratamento foram testados, de acordo com a norma técnica ASTM D-2017 (2008). O apodrecimento acelerado causado pelo fungo de podridão parda G. trabeum foi comparado com o do fungo de podridão branca P. sanguineus, estudado por Calonego et al. (2010). Os resultados mostraram que (1) o apodrecimento causado pelo fungo de podridão parda foi maior que o de podridão branca e (2) o aumento da temperature de 180 para 220 ºC ocasionou reduções de 28,2% a 70,0% na perda de massa dos corpos de prova de E. grandis incubados com o G. trabeum.

In this study, we aimed evaluate the behavior of the brown-rot fungus Gloeophylum trabeum and white-rot fungus Pycnoporus sanguineus on thermally-modified Eucalyptus grandis wood. To this end, boards from five-year-eleven-month-old E. grandis trees, taken from the Duratex-SA company stock, were thermally-modified between 180 ºC and 220 ºC in the Laboratory of Wood Drying and Preservation at Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, Botucatu, Sao Paulo state Brazil. Samples of each treatment were tested according to the ASTM D-2017 (2008) technical norm. The accelerated decay caused by the brown-rot fungus G. trabeum was compared with the decay caused by the white-rot fungus P. sanguineus, studied by Calonego et al. (2010). The results showed that (1) brown-rot fungus caused greater decay than white-rot fungus; and (2) the increase in temperature from 180 to 220 ºC caused reductions between 28.2% and 70.0% in the weight loss of E. grandis samples incubated with G. trabeum.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar os tipos de ruptura durante os ensaios mecânicos da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis modificada termicamente. Para tanto, tábuas centrais de 19 árvores de E. grandis com 5,9 anos de idade foram utilizadas nesse estudo. As tábuas foram secas até 10% de umidade, aplainadas com 32 mm de espessura e seccionadas em peças com 0,60 m de comprimento. Posteriormente, uma das peças foi mantida em seu estado original e as demais foram modificadas termicamente à 140ºC, 160ºC, 180ºC, 200ºC e 220ºC por 2,5 horas. De cada peça foram produzidos corpos-deprova para os ensaios de compressão paralela às fibras e de flexão estática. O material foi aclimatizado em câmara climática com 21ºC e 65% de umidade relativa, no Laboratório de Secagem e Preservação da Madeira da FCA, UNESP, de Botucatu, SP, Brasil. Após os ensaios mecânicos, os tipos de ruptura foram caracterizados pela norma ASTM D-143 (2007). Os resultados mostraram que: (1) existe uma relação direta, pelo teste qui-quadrado, entre a temperatura do tratamento térmico e a ruptura frágil da madeira de E. grandis; e (2) a madeira dessa espécie quando modificada termicamente à 220ºC apresentou 100% de ruptura caracterizada como frágil.

This study aimed to evaluate the types of failures after the mechanical tests of thermally-modified Eucalyptus grandis wood. The present study utilized boards that contained the pith from 5 years and 11 months old Eucalyptus grandis trees. The boards were dried up to 10.0% moisture content, planing to 32-mm thick, and cutted into smaller pieces measuring 0.60 m in length. Subsequently, one piece was kept in its original condition and others pieces were thermally-modified at 140ºC, 160ºC, 180ºC, 200ºC and 220ºC over a period of 2.5 hours. Specimens were obtained for the compression-parallelto-grain and static-bending tests. All of the specimens were placed in a climatic chamber (21ºC and 65% relative humidity) in the Laboratory of Wood Drying and Preservation in the Department of Natural Resources/Forest Sciences, FCA-UNESP, Botucatu-SP, in Brazil. After the mechanical tests the types of failures were classified as recommended by ASTM D-143 (2007). The results show that: (1) there is a direct relationship between the heat treatment temperature and brittle wood by chi-square test; and (2) the E. grandis wood when thermally-modified at 220ºC presented 100% of fragile failure.

Durante o crescimento, as árvores produzem diferentes tipos de tecido lenhoso. O xilema produzido nos primeiros anos até certa idade cambial é denominado lenho juvenil e apresenta propriedades físicas, mecânicas, químicas e anatômicas diferentes do xilema produzido após certa idade cambial, isto é, quando as células do câmbio já amadureceram. Dessa forma, um prévio conhecimento sobre a qualidade da matéria-prima produzida é de fundamental importância para melhor aplicabilidade do material. Com base nesse contexto, este trabalho objetivou, a partir de dados de comprimento de traqueídeos e densidade da madeira, delimitar a idade de transição entre os lenhos juvenil e adulto. Para isso, coletaram-se três árvores de Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm., com 35 anos de idade, provenientes da Estação Experimental de Itapetininga, localizada em São Paulo, Brasil. De cada árvore, retiraram-se discos de aproximadamente 5 cm de espessura, extraídos a 0,05 m do solo, que foram utilizados para determinação radial da densidade pelo método de atenuação da radiação gama e comprimento dos traqueídeos. Os resultados da análise de regressão linear indicaram que o lenho juvenil está limitado aos sete primeiros anos de crescimento da árvore e o lenho adulto é formado após os 20 anos de idade. No lenho adulto há diferenças significativas entre as idades médias obtidas através do comprimento dos traqueídeos e da densidade da madeira.

Trees produce different types of woody tissue during growth. The xylem produced in the first years until a certain cambial age is called juvenile wood and has different physical, mechanical, chemical and anatomical characteristics from that produced later, when the cambial cells have matured. Thus, prior knowledge of the quality of the wood is of fundamental importance for choosing the best use of the material. This work aimed at using data from length of the tracheid and wood density to define the age transition from juvenile to mature wood. For this, three Pinus elliottii var.elliottii trees, aged 35 years, were collected at the Itapetininga Experimental Station, located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. From each tree, disks of about 5 cm thick were obtained 0.05 m above the ground and used to determine the radial density by the gamma ray attenuation method and to measure the length of the tracheids. The results obtained by linear regression analysis showed that juvenile wood is limited to the first seven years of tree growth and the formation of mature wood occurs after twenty years. For the mature wood, there are significant differences among the averages obtained from the tracheid length and wood density.

RESUMO O lenho juvenil apresenta grande diferença em suas propriedades anatômicas e físicas em relação ao lenho adulto. Essa heterogeneidade da madeira causa uma série de transtornos para a indústria de transformação e processamento. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo das propriedades físicas dos lenhos juvenil e adulto de Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii, com 25 anos de idade, e de Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden, com 30 anos de idade, provenientes da Estação Experimental de Itapetininga e da Floresta Estadual de Santa Bárbara, pertencentes ao Instituto Florestal do Estado de São Paulo. Para tanto, de ambas as espécies, foram retirados, de tábuas radiais, corpos de prova com dimensões de 20x30x50 mm, para a determinação das massas específicas, dos inchamentos e dos coeficientes de retratibilidade dos lenhos juvenil e adulto. Os resultados das espécies mostraram que os lenhos adultos comparados com os lenhos juvenis apresentaram: (1) um aumento nos valores das massas específicas básica, a 0% e a 12% de umidade, dos inchamentos volumétricos e lineares tangencial e radial a 12% de umidade e máximos, e dos coeficientes de retratibilidade tangencial e radial; (2) uma redução nos valores de inchamentos lineares longitudinais a 12% de umidade e máximos, e do coeficiente de retratibilidade longitudinal.

ABSTRACT The juvenile wood presents great difference in its anatomical and physical properties in relation to the mature wood. That heterogeneity of the wood causes a series of upset for the processing industry. The present research had as objective the study of the physical properties of the juvenile and mature wood of Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii, with 25 years of age and of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden, with 30 years of age, coming from the Experimental Station of Itapetininga and State Forest of Santa Barbara, belonging to the Forest Institute of the state of São Paulo. From both species there were taken from radial boards, specimens with dimensions of 20x30x50 mm, for the determination of density, swelling and swelling coefficient of the juvenile and mature wood. The results of the species showed that the mature compared with the juvenile wood presented: (1) an increase in the values of the basic density, at 0% and at 12% of moisture content and of the volumetric, radial and tangential swelling at 12% moisture content and maximum coefficient of radial and tangential swelling; (2) a reduction in the values of longitudinal swelling at 12% and maximum and of the longitudinal swelling coefficient.

Abstract The objective this study was a comparative evaluation of wood density and productivity of five treatments of hybrids of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis x P. tecunumannii with a seminal of P. caribaea var. hondurensis planted in the same settlement in the town of Agudos-SP. It was determined the basic density of each disc by the immersion method. The productivity was determined by the average annual increments volume and mass. Results showed that the hybrids treatments had productivity in volume of up to 23% higher what the seminal treatment, however had a decrease of approximately 10% in density.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma avaliação comparativa da densidade e produtividade da madeira de cinco tratamentos de híbridos de Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis x P. tecunumannii com um seminal de P. caribaea var. hondurensis plantados no mesmo povoamento no município de Agudos-SP. Determinou-se a densidade básica de cada disco pelo método de imersão. A produtividade foi determinada por meio dos incrementos médios anuais de volume e de massa. Os resultados evidenciaram que os tratamentos híbridos tiveram produtividade em volume de até 23 % maior que o tratamento seminal, entretanto houve diminuição de aproximadamente 10 % na densidade.

O objetivo deste estudo foi adequar o modelo geral de determinação do tempo de vaporização de toras, proposto por Steinhagen et al. (1980), para a madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. Para tanto, foram coletadas toras de 20 a <25, de 25 a <30 e de 30 a <35 cm de diâmetro de 14 árvores de E. grandis provenientes do Horto Florestal de Mandurí, SP, pertencente ao Instituto Florestal de São Paulo. Em cada uma das toras foi inserido um termopar próximo ao seu centro. Posteriormente, as toras foram vaporizadas a 90 ºC e 100% de umidade relativa, durante 20 horas. Um coletor de dados registrou as temperaturas, no interior do material, durante o tratamento térmico. Conclui-se que o modelo de Steinhagen et al. (1980) não pode ser diretamente aplicado à espécie em estudo, e propõem-se fatores de correções para a utilização do modelo geral de determinação do tempo de vaporização de toras, desenvolvido por Steinhagen et al. (1980), para a madeira de Eucalyptus grandis.

The aim this study was to adjust the general model for determining log steaming time, proposed by Steinhagen et al. (1980), for Eucalyptus grandis wood. In order to do so, logs with diameter from 20 to <25, 25 to <30 and 30 to <35 cm were collected from 14 trees of Eucalyptus grandis derived from the `Horto Florestal' nursery, Manduri, São Paulo. A thermocouple was inserted into each log near its center. The logs were steamed during 20 hours at 90ºC and 100% relative humidity. A data logger recorded the temperatures during the thermal treatment. It was concluded that the Steinhagen et al. (1980) model cannot be directly used for this species in study and corrections factors are proposed for the utilization of the general model for log steaming time, developed by Steinhagen et al. (1980), for Eucalyptus grandis wood.

O objectivo deste trabalho foi o estudo da composição química da madeira nos sentidos medula-casca e base-topo em Eucalyptus citriodora. Para tanto, foram seleccionadas 5 árvores e retirados discos a 0,3 m de altura e posteriormente a cada 4 m, até à altura comercial correspondente a 12 cm de diâmetro. Retirou-se 1 cunha de cada disco para determinação da análise química nos lenhos juvenil e adulto. Os resultados mostram que: (1) No sentido base-topo os teores de lignina e de holocelulose são constantes tanto para o lenho juvenil quanto para o adulto. Os teores de extractivos totais, no lenho juvenil, decresce até ao terceiro toro e acima ocorre comportamento inverso. No lenho adulto há um decréscimo de extractivos com a altura. (2) No sentido medula-casca o teor de lignina é sempre superior no lenho juvenil, em todos os toros, sendo que ocorre diferença significativa no primeiro toro. O teor de holocelulose é sempre menor no lenho juvenil e existe diferença significativa entre os dois tipos de lenhos nos terceiro e sexto toros. O teor de extractivos totais é menor no lenho juvenil do primeiro ao quarto toro e nas restantes o lenho adulto é que apresenta menor teor deste composto.

L'objectif de ce travail fut d'étudier la composition chimique du bois dans le sens moelle-écorce et base-cime chez l'Eucalyptus citriodora. Pour cela, 5 arbres furent sélectionnés et des disques on a retiré à 0,3 m de hauteur et postérieurement tous les 4 mètres, jusqu'à la hauteur commerciale correspondant à 12 centimètres de diamètre. Un copeau fut retiré de chaque disque pour la détermination de l'analyse chimique des bois juvéniles issus et adultes issus. Les résultats montrent que: (1) Dans le sens base-cime les teneurs en lignine et d'holocellulose sont constantes aussi bien pour le bois juvénile issu que pour l'adulte. Les teneurs d'extractifs totaux dans le bois juvénile issu décroissent jusqu'au troisième tore et au-dessus le comportement inverse se produit. Chez le bois adulte issu, se produit un décroissement des extractifs en fonction de la hauteur. (2) Dans le sens moelle-écorce la teneur en lignine est toujours supérieure dans le bois juvénile issu dans tous les tores, alors qu'il n'apparaît pas de différence significative dans le premier tore. La teneur en holocellulose est toujours plus faible dans le bois juvénile et il existe aussi une différence significative entre les deux types de bois dans le troisième et sixième tore. La teneur en extractifs totaux est plus faible dans le bois juvénile issu du premier et quatrième tore et dans les autres, le bois adulte issu est celui qui présente la plus faible teneur de ce composé.

The aim of this work was to study the chemical composition of wood in the basis-top and pith-bark directions in Eucalyptus citriodora. Five trees were selected and discs collected at a height of 0,3m and every 4 m thereafter up to commercial height (corresponding to 12cm diameter). One wedge of each disc was removed for determination of the chemical analysis in the mature and juvenile wood. The results showed that: (1) In the basis-top direction the lignin and holocellulose content are constant in both the juvenile and mature wood. The extractive content in juvenile wood decreased up to the third log, though above this the contrary occurs. In mature wood there is a decrease in the extractive content with height; (2) In the pith-bark direction the lignin content is always higher in the juvenile wood in all the logs, although there was a significant difference in the first log. The holocellulose content was always smaller in the juvenile wood and showed a significant difference between juvenile and mature wood in the third and sixth logs. The extractive contents were smaller in the juvenile wood of the first and fourth logs, whereas a lower percentage of this component was shown in the mature wood of the remaining logs.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da vaporização de toras na redução de defeitos associados com as tensões de crescimento residuais em Eucalyptus grandis. Para, tanto foram utilizadas toras com diâmetros de 20 a <25 cm, de 25 a <30 cm e de 30 a <35 cm, procedentes do Horto Florestal de Mandurí, SP. Metade do número de toras foi vaporizada a 90ºC de temperatura e 100% de umidade relativa durante 20 horas. Posteriormente, as toras foram desdobradas pelo sistema de corte tangencial e realizadas medições dos defeitos decorrentes das tensões de crescimento em toras de diferentes classes de diâmetro. Os resultados evidenciam que: a vaporização das toras proporcionou a liberação de grande parte das tensões de crescimento, sem contudo eliminá-las por completo, mostrando que esse tratamento é tecnicamente viável e recomendável para a liberação das tensões de crescimento; as tábuas provenientes de toras vaporizadas de 20 a <25 cm de diâmetro apresentaram, em geral, maiores reduções nos índices de defeitos, mostrando que quanto menor foi o diâmetro das toras maior foi a eficiência do tratamento de aplicação de vapor a 90ºC de temperatura durante 20 horas.

ABSTRACT The present study was carried out to evaluate log steaming effect on the reduction of defects associated with residual growth stress of Eucalyptus grandis wood. There were used logs with diameter of 20 to <25, 25 to <30 and 30 to <35 cm, from the Horto Florestal, Manduri, São Paulo. Half of the logs was steamed during 20 hours at 90ºC of temperature and 100% of relative humidity. Subsequently, the logs were live sawn and the defects resulting from the growth stresses in logs of various diameter were measured. The results indicate that log steaming provided the release of a great part of the growth stresses, without eliminating them completely, showing, nevertheless, that this treatment is feasible and advisable for growth stress relief; the boards coming from heated logs of 20 to <25 cm presented, in general, larger defect reduction, showing that the smaller the log diameter the higher the efficiency of steam treatment at 90ºC of temperature during 20 hours.

Abstract The present study has in aim the evaluate the effect of log steaming on calorific value from Eucalyptus grandis. The wood and bark of the log end and bark were removed bark both before and after the steaming process at 90ºC of temperature during 18 hour. After, to determined the calorific value of wood and bark for calorific method. The results showed that: (1) the log’s steaming reduced significantly the wood calorific value of 4752,54 to 4641,55 Kcal/Kg but don’t damaged the burn potential; and (2) the bark calorific value were 3877,32 and 3862,79Kcal/Kg, respective from conhol and steamed barks wi wout significant difference.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da vaporização de toras no poder calorífico de Eucalyptus grandis. Para tanto, foram retirados madeira e casca dos topos das toras, antes e depois do processo de vaporização à 90ºC de temperatura durante 18horas. Posteriormente, determinou-se o poder calorífico superior da madeira e da casca pelo método da bomba calorimétrica. Os resultados mostraram que: (1) a vaporização reduziu o poder calorífico superior da madeira de 4752,54 para 4641,55Kcal/ Kg, porém sem prejudicar o potencial de combustão da espécie; e (2) o poder calorífico superior da casca sem tratamento e da vaporizada são iguais estatisticamente e na ordem de 3877,32 e 3862,79Kcal/ Kg.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate three methods of density determination (12% moisture content and basic density). The methods applied were: Stereometry for immersion, and stereometry for direct measurement and gamma ray. Tree of Pinus elliottii of 8, 15, 25 e 35 age, from reforestation submitted or not drawing resin process, were harvested and then sectioned at the DBH, base, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of commercial height. The obtained results showed that the applied methods did not present statistic significant differences. However, the method by gamma ray allowed to determine the density of millimeter by millimeter according to direction pith-bark and to transform the density to 12% of moisture content in basic density and density to 0% of moisture content, without saturation and total drying of sample, respectively.

RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar três métodos de determinação da densidade da madeira a 12 % e densidade básica. Os métodos usados foram: estereometria por imersão e por medição direta e o método de atenuação por radiação gama. Para tal, foram coletados discos de árvores de Pinus elliottii, oriundos de reflorestamento submetidas ou não ao processo de resinagem, com idade de 8, 15, 25 e 35, nas posições da base, DAP, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da altura comercial. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os métodos empregados não apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas. Entretanto, o método de atenuação da radiação gama permitiu determinar a densidade no sentido medulacasca, de milímetro em milímetro e transformar a densidade obtida na umidade de equilíbrio, em torno de 12% em densidade básica e densidade anidra, sem saturação e secagem total da amostra, respectivamente.
